Whale Watching in Ketchikan: May

Experience the dramatic arrival of the giants against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.

What to Expect in May 2026

May marks the beginning of the Alaska cruise season. While the whales are just starting to arrive from their winter migrations, the experience is uniquely beautiful and far less crowded than the peak summer months.

Sighting Probability

Humpbacks: 70% | Orcas: 30%

Most Humpbacks are arriving from Hawaii. You'll often see "scouts" entering the protected waters of the Inside Passage. Orca activity is present but less predictable than in June.

The Scenery

This is the best month for photography. The mountains surrounding Ketchikan are still heavily laden with snow, creating a high-contrast "fire and ice" aesthetic when a whale breaches.

2026 Season Note

Early May 2026 is expected to be cooler than average. We highly recommend dressing in multiple base layers and bringing a windproof, waterproof outer shell.

May Weather & Gear

Condition Average Gear Recommendation
Air Temp 45°F - 55°F Thermal base layers are essential.
Water Temp 44°F Expect extreme cold on open-deck boats.
Daylight 16 Hours Plenty of time for late afternoon tours.

Early Season Advantage

Boat tours in May are rarely at full capacity, allowing for more movement and better viewing angles on the deck. It's the "connoisseur's month" for those who value space and scenery.
