Whale Watching in Ketchikan: September

Farewell to the giants as the landscape transitions into golden autumn.

The Autumn Farewell

September is the final month of the Ketchikan whale watching season. While some whales begin their journey south, many stay through the entire month to take advantage of the final fish runs. It is a peaceful, stunning time to be on the water.

Sighting Probability

Humpbacks: 80% | Orcas: 40%

While probability drops slightly, the whales that remain are often very active, appearing closer to shore in the quieter, post-peak channels.

The Atmosphere

The hills surrounding the Inside Passage turn brilliant shades of orange and red. The "crowd fever" of mid-summer is gone, providing a much more intimate encounter with nature.

2026 Season Finale

September 2026 cruise itineraries are significantly discounted. This makes it an ideal month for those looking for a high-value Alaska experience, even with the slightly increased risk of cancellations due to autumn storms.
